Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was a American soldier awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal, during the Second World War. Before joining the Corps he served in the United States Army for three years. Sadly Basilone was killed during the Battle of Iwo Jima, after which he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. "Manila John" is still a legend in the Corps to this day, Semper Fi John!
